- “
Gentlemen: We are building 4 cylinder motors of 4” bore by 6” stroke and 4 3/8 bore by 6” stroke and 6 cylinder motors of 3 ¾ bore by 5 ¾ stroke and we would like to have all the information that it is possible for you to give us regarding the radiation required for these motors.  The motors are of the valve in the head type and cool very easily.  If you have any comparative data regarding the various size motors on the market at this time and number of square inches of surface required for cooling same we should be very much pleased to receive such information so that we may have some data to work from.  Thanking you in advance for such information, I beg to remain, Yours very truly, DUESENBERG MOTORS CORPORATION.  F. There is a purple ink stamp along the bottom of the letter, directly below Fred Duesenberg’s signature, which reads – “AUG 20 1917”.   This likely refers to the date in which the letter was received by the Rome Turney Radiator Company.
FREDERICK SAMUEL DUESENBERG (1876 – 1932)
was a German-born American automotive pioneer who designed and manufactured racing cars.  The Duesenberg brothers, Fred and August, got their start manufacturing automobiles when they created the Mason Automobile Company which was then purchased by Frederick Maytag in 1910, resulting in the Maytag-Mason Motor Company of Iowa.  Maytag would sell his interest in the company and the name reverted back to the Mason Motor Company which went bankrupt in 1915.   The Duesenberg brothers moved to St. Paul, Minnesota and founded the Duesenberg Automobile and Motors Company, Inc., which produced automobile engines and racing cars.  The Duesenberg Model J is one of the classic, American luxury automobiles of all time, selling for over million dollars at auction.
CONDITION:
letter is completely original and authentic, measuring about 8 3/8 x 10 7/8 inches in size.  It is in EXCELLENT condition with a bold signature.  There are some folds (one horizontal and two vertical) but NO rips or tears (see scans).
