)
Republican Everett McKinley Dirksen was the conservative bipartisan
Senate Minority Leader during the administrations of Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson from 1959 until his death.

Defeated in 1930 in his bid for a congressional seat, Dirksen ran again in 1932 and won. A conservative Republican, Dirksen voted against most New Deal measures - except Social Security. He also opposed Franklin D. Roosevelt’s foreign policy, adhering to an isolationist stance. In a foreshadowing of his later moderation and flexibility, however, Dirksen switched to bipartisan support of presidential foreign policy with U.S. entry into World War II.

A severe eye ailment forced Dirksen to resign his House seat in 1948. He returned to Pekin, Illinois, to practice law, having gained admittance to the bar by examination while serving in Congress. By 1950 his health was fully restored, and he ran successfully for a seat in the Senate, serving from 1951 until his death in 1969.

Throughout the 1950s, Dirksen belonged to the conservative wing of the Republican Party. He backed Sen. Robert A. Taft for the 1952 presidential nomination and he supported the anticommunist crusade of Sen. Joseph McCarthy until the Wisconsin Senator was discredited in the middle of the decade.

Elected Minority Leader of the Senate in 1959, Dirksen continued to voice support for several conservative policies, including the permitting of prayer in public schools.

As the Republican Senate Minority Leader, Sen. Everett M. Dirksen played a crucial role in securing passage of major pieces of legislation in the 1960s: the Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

In his constituency, in the Senate, and through the medium of television, Dirksen became something of a folk hero for his rich bass voice and imposing oratorical style, attributes for which his critics dubbed him “the wizard of ooze.” He won his last election in 1968 and served in the Senate until his death the following year.

I was the handwriting expert contacted in the "1775 Almanac" episode on the PBS series "History
Detectives" which was televised on Tuesday, September 6, 2011. I was asked to identify the writer of the notes handwritten on the pages of the almanac, notes that recorded, among other events, the Battles of Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill.
The unknown owner of the almanac had used it as a diary. Filmed in the Library of Congress, I compared the writing in the almanac with a signed letter handwritten in 1779. --- Herman Darvick
