Good content in which Rives sends this letter by his daughter, Amelia Rives Sigourney (1832-1873), along with a copy of his book, which he had specially bound with gilt edges in Boston - likely the first volume of his "Life and Times of James Madison (4 Volumes, Boston, 1859-1868).
The letter reads:
My dear son,
I send you by Amelia a copy of my book, which I had bound, with gilt edges, for you in Boston. I am sorry that the lettering, confined to a small space on the book, has been rubbed, owing to bad packing; but Messrs. Little, Brown & Co., by whom the binding was done, will have it repaired for you, with very little trouble.
I enclose herewith your certificate of stock in the B. & O. R.R. Co., on which I received the dividend, as you desired.
With best love to Grace & the children, very truly & affectionately yours,
W. C. Rives"
