Description
The Pantheon de la Guerre was an enormous mural painting created by more than 100 French artists in 1918. Indeed at the time it was the largest painting in the world - 402 feet long and 45 feet high. After it was initially displayed in Paris the painting went on tour in the United States with a special structure created for the exhibit at the Chicago World's Fair in 1933. The painting never made it back to France. By 1940 it was forgotten and disgracefully left outside a Baltimore warehouse in the elements causing large parts to have permanent damage. A local man purchased the painting at auction and was convinced to donate it to the National World War I Museum in Kansas City, MO. The mural needed restoration to the areas that were destroyed by neglect and the size was reduced. This book was printed in 1932 and shows the painting as it was originally created. There are 12 fold-out pages in order to show in scale.
From the front cover: (The original mural) "Containing Six Thousand Life-Size Portraits of World War Heroes and Leaders Representing all the Allied Nations" - "With A Correct Landscape of the Battlefields of France and Belgium as They Appeared in 1914-1918". The foldout measures 114" (10 feet) x 11".
Purchased at auction as is - I'm not certain if there was originally any other cover. The pages are in good condition with 2 pages with tears at top edge (see last pics), foldouts intact. Cover has a tattered back upper corner, small tears along edge.
I will combine shipping on multiple purchases.
